Renee Nicole Good, an award-winning poet, wife, and mother of 3 was shot by an ICE Agent on January 7th in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her being a white woman who was born here and shot by ICE has raised many different views in people’s eyes. More so, focusing on those closely following the ICE activity rising in the US as of recent; people who once were very supportive of President Trump accelerating his Anti-Immigrant movement are now pausing to think whether ICE actions are truly just.
The Trump administration’s sweeping deportation campaign does not include people born here with citizenship, which then raises the question: Why was Renne Good shot then?
ICE officials have stated the shooting occurred because she was ‘obstructing them from doing their jobs’. Videos have circulated from various points of view, showing she moved her car the other direction, steering away from the ICE agent who shot her. The Trump Administration said the agent acted in “self-defense” and accused Ms. Good of intending to harm him with her car.
Local officials called the shooting unjust and reckless. The Mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey, even went on record saying, “Get the f**k out of Minneapolis,” directing the comment at ICE (CNN).
With the number of points of view given in videos, it seems to be clear Ms. Good had no intent of running the agent over with her car in that moment, but was just trying to move away from him. President Trump says, “When you look at that tape, it— it can be viewed two ways, I guess. But when you look at the way … that car was pulled away, there are a couple versions of that tape that are very, very bad.” (CBS).
President Trump initially spoke on the shooting hours after Ms. Good was killed, saying she acted “violently, willfully, and viciously ran over the ICE officer”. Though more recently, after learning her father was a devoted Trump supporter, he states, “You know they’re going to make mistakes. Sometimes ICE is going to be too rough with somebody, or, you know — they deal with rough people. They’re going to make a mistake. Sometimes it can happen terribly.” (NYT). He says he hopes her father is still a fan of his after this tragic event.
Now, people are re-considering their support of ICE and what the organization is doing when Trump’s agenda. More are taking ICE sightings seriously and are becoming fearful of being caught in the crossfire of their detaining of others. This creates a sort of shift in not only the mindset of many who, before, blindly followed the idea of getting illegal immigrants out of the US through ICE, but also in the actions ICE is capable of. The organization has shown they will use violent, deadly force if they deem it necessary in the moment, against anyone.
