Greenland is a self-governed territory and a part of Denmark. President Donald Trump has intentions to takeover Greenland. He said he will increase the tariffs for countries that oppose Trump’s Takeover of Greenland, hoping this will encourage more nations to be in support of him acquiring Greenland.

Greenland is a mineral rich piece of land, which may be part of the reason why Trump wants it. Another potential factor in Trump’s reasoning for potentially acquiring Greenland is related to the Nobel Peace Prize Award. Trump told Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, that he no longer feels “an obligation to think purely of Peace,” and that he “can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America.” in a message shared to other NATO allies as well. In the later part of his message Trump once again mentioned his plans to take over Greenland. Furthermore, Trump has brought up the factor of China or Russia and how they could acquire the land instead, which is what he says he would be preventing if he were to take over Greenland.

Much of the public, especially outside America is not responding well to this. European NATO members are accusing Trump of blackmail through the increase of their tariffs, but have also agreed to meet to discuss his demands. In a recent poll 75% of Americans polled said they opposed an acquisition of Greenland. Also, thousands of Greenland citizens are marching in opposition of the acquisition. Though other people in America, Greenland, and other nations see some validity in the reasoning Trump has presented for a Greenland takeover.
