Tuesday, February 17, Dr. Linda Davis, a special education elementary school teacher, was crashed into and killed, on her way to work in Savannah, Georgia. The man who crashed into her, Oscar Vasquez-Lopez, was part of a car pursuit with ICE agents that turned deadly. Officials say Vasquez-Lopez originally complied with ICE agents before then fleeing the scene and driving away recklessly. ICE agents began pursuing him in vehicles without notifying the local police.
In an update released by the county police, “Chatham County police weren’t part of – or aware of—the federal immigration operation, the [police] department said, until after the crash” (CNN).
It was Davis’s first year teaching at Herman W. Hesse K-8 School in Savannah. “‘I wanted to make our families aware that our school has experienced the death of a teacher, who was killed in a traffic accident this morning just outside the school. Dr. Linda Davis was a beloved member of our school family and her loss has affected us deeply,'” Principal Alonna McMullen posted on Facebook concerning the crash.
Vasquez-Lopez has been issued a final order of removal by a federal judge in 2024. ICE agents saw him getting into a vehicle and attempted to start a traffic stop. “Vasquez Lopez was arrested by CCPD officers and charged with first-degree homicide by vehicle, reckless driving, driving without valid license, and failure to obey traffic control device,” according to MSN. Chatham County Chairman Chester Ellis stated if the department were made aware of the situation, it would have been possible to minimize the violence and severity of how it ended.
With the amount of ICE news and recent concerns within all parties over the administration’s increase in deportations making communities more dangerous, CNN is currently the only major news source reporting on Davis’ death.
