The U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts claims that Harvard has intentionally ignored the harm done towards Israeli and/or Jewish pupils.
In the aftermath of the October 7th attack, many protests erupted in schools throughout the United States; specifically, many Ivy League colleges stood as places of protest including Harvard. The university has gained the attention of many political figures. Trump’s administration has insisted that they decrease funding and retrieve the taxpayer dollars.
Last September, when protests were rising, a federal judge had an opposition to Trump’s current claims. That year, the judge ruled that it was within the institution and the Harvard student’s first amendment rights to protest. Trumps administration claims that Harvard’s action towards the student environment has not been aligned with the Civil Rights Act.
The representation of Harvard in the media directly correlates to the way society perceives class and higher education. 11.2% to 25.9% of generals, admirals and House members are Ivy Leage Alumni (Forbes).
Trump has already enacted many barriers and punishments towards Harvard, and yet the university continues to push back. Chabad Rabbi Hirschy Zarchi, a Harvard spokesperson, made it clear that Harvard has no tolerance for discrimination and any case of that will be cause of violation for their code of conduct. In 2025, Harvard Magazine discussed the ways that the school is taking precautions to protect students and up-keep a peaceful protest environment.
When asked about the case, another Harvard spokesperson kept a strong front, maintaining their defense of the university. Specifically, they noted the ways that this lawsuit points towards “pretextual and retaliatory action.” Although Trump’s administration has threatened to remove funding and grants, Harvard has refused to bend their own grounded ideas.
As this push and tug conflict furthers, Harvard may continue to reap the consequences of lessened funds and grants. With $2.6 billion at stake, Harvard may still fight against the claims and insist on their procedures. As protests have died down over the recent years, the students may feel a complexity within the conflict – balancing their future education and their personal values.
