During Destination D23, a premier Disney fan event at Walt Disney World Resort’s Coronado Springs in Orlando, Jared Bush, Disney Animation’s Chief Creative Officer revealed “Hexed” a new up and coming film. The film is set to hit theaters in November, 2026, with a potential 2D art style as was seen in the teaser image.
The film is set to be produced by Josie Trinidad (“Zootopia+”) and Jason Hand (“Moana 2”), with Roy Conli and Juan Pablo Reyes Lancaster-Jones as producers. The film has been tagged with both Computer Animation as well as Hand-Drawn Animation on IMDB, the site also has the stars for the film tagged. Jim Hanks, CeeLo Green, Emilie-Claire Barlow, however the roles and the characters they play are unknown.
The only information we have on the plot of the movie is the log line that states “An awkward teen and his Type-A mother learn his peculiarities might be magical powers, transforming their lives and revealing a hidden magical realm.”
The response to the film from internet users has been diverse, with many people are excited by the film’s seeming return to 2D animation that fans have desired for years now. Despite the excitement of some, others have expressed a more negative response to the film due to how the released plot details seem very similar to existing Disney properties. One popular series that comes up in the conversation isĀ “The Owl House” by Dana Terrace; the plots of both stories have been compared to one another, both feature a kid that doesn’t fit in due to their eccentricities, a magical world, and finding themself in magic.
There’s a level of bitterness from fans of the show, due to the fact that their show was canceled and now the production studio is going onto make a 2D movie that would bring in a lot of the same audience. It’s unclear what the movie will actually be like, and how audiences will receive the movie upon launch, but its exciting to see 2D animation coming back to Disney movies.
