Amid xenophobic protests and attacks from the citizens of Ghana, people are requesting to be relocated. On May 12, Ghana evacuated 300 citizens from South Africa, from the wave of violence targeting migrants from sub-African countries. According to the Foreign minister, Samuel Okudzeto Albakwa, the citizens were registered through the High Commission of Ghana.
Protests have erupted due to the undocumented immigration, with the police and authorities condemning violence and pledging attacks against the xenophobes. More protests arose due to the circulation of graphic videos on social media showcasing the attacks on foreign nationals. In the middle of the violence two foreign nationals were killed. In response to the chaos, Nigeria released an official post stating, a “voluntary reparation program” for the two nationals who were killed. 130 citizens have also requested to be returned to their homes.
South African countries including Kenya, Malawi, Lesotho, and Zimbabwe were advised to keep their foreign nationals indoors until conflict clears. Although xenophobic attacks have been reoccurring for decades across South Africa, it’s presidential spokesperson, Vicent Magwenya stated that “South Africans are not xenophobic”. However, uprisings and riots still have broken out as migrants have been seeking refuge from unstable living.
