Shortly after 4 p.m., detectives responded to reports of a homicide suspect near 1st Street and Broadway in Louisville, where they confronted the man. This led to an shootout ensuing, which ended with the suspects death.
When the detectives arrived, they approached the man who was by himself behind the Taco Bell at 108 E. Broadway. The deputy chief said officers simply called to the man and told him to put his hands on his head, however, in response the subject pulled out a gun and shot at the officers. The officers fired back, and the man went down. After refusing the order to drop his gun, the officers shot the man again, and he died.
The LMPD Public Integrity Unit is leading the investigation. The officers involved will be placed on administrative leave, with their names released having been released on Thursday. Sgt. Joshua Arnwine, Officer Arron Sauer, Officer Matthew Forbes, Officer Evan Stovall and Officer Michael Leek were the men identified to be involved in the incident. Out of the five, two of them–Arnwine and Forbes–were involved in previous police shootings. Both were exonerated and did not face discipline.
Forbes fired shots in 2024 in a case where police said a man charged at officers with a butcher knife. The man died. As for Arnwine, he was involved in a 2023 case where he shot an armed man who refused to drop his gun.
Body cam footage of the officers still has not been released, however it is set to release within the next 10 business days, per LMPD policy. What will come to the five men, whether they will be exonerated or not, has not yet been reveal as the department is still in the process of investigating the matter, and there is currently no projected end for the investigation. As for the homicide suspect, the man still has not been identified. Furthermore, the police not provided any information about which homicide he was connected to.
