Multiple government organizations related to various scientific endeavors are facing potential loss of funding. Since mid-October there have been many organizations threatened with budget cuts such as the National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA), National Institute of Health (NIH), and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Prior to this in late May, President Trump made proposals for the 2026 fiscal year in which there were budget cuts to science programs such as the National Science Foundation budget by 57%, the National Institute of Health budget by 40%, and NASA’s science budget by 47%.

Furthermore, as the government shutdown continues and the 2026 fiscal year has begun concerns have been brought up about the executions for these proposals that would have already taken months to carry out, but now could take even longer with the government shutdown.

Uncertainty within these programs could affect the planning out of certain endeavors, particularly involving engineering. For example, “NASA selected two mission concepts last year for further study, planning to choose one in 2026 for development. However, the 2026 budget proposal would cancel the entire probe program.” according to Jeff Faust, a planetary science expert.

Overall, various budget cuts to programs can affect people and organizations in a multitude of various ways and it will take time before people see the full extent of these changes.
