On February 24, Meta, owner of Facebook announced that it will buy Artificial Intelligence (AI) chips owned by Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). The particular chips that Meta will purchase are known as the MI450. Meta will use this to help power data centers.
“We are proud to expand our strategic partnership with Meta as they push the boundaries of AI at an unprecedented scale,” said Dr. Lisa Su, chair and CEO of AMD.
The appeal for Meta to invest in such AI endeavors is very clear. As a tech company it has to keep up with competition such as Google and Open AI. Meta AI may not be the most prevalent AI platform, but this expansion is contributing to new ways and metrics in which Meta AI can be used.
This partnership is said to increase the performance ability of the platform. Overall, both sides of the partnership are branching out, with AMD mostly being known for making tech for gaming. This partnership is said to be a multi-year long endeavor that holds much of the future for AI in its hands. Much is uncertain when it comes to the future of AI, but Meta and AMD are certainly making technological strides.
