Late March 2026, in a luxury hotel in São Paulo, Brazil, where multiple artists were staying for the Lollapalooza festival, 11-year-old Ava Law and her mother Catherine Harding were approached by Chappell Roan’s bodyguard: Pascal Duvier. He reprimanded the women after the little girl had walked by Roan’s table and smiled at the singer to confirm her identity. The story broke on Instagram when Ava Law’s stepfather made a post about the incident, and since then the situation has snowballed as we get more and more viewpoints.
Saying “My daughter was sitting there in tears” and “It was just a child admiring someone” going onto talk about the importance of fans as a celebrity. After this was posted on Insta, the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Cavaliere, banned Roan from preforming at Todo Mundo in Rio as long as he is in office. While this may seem extreme to American audiences, this is very in line with how Brazil responds within fandom spaces.
On Sunday, March 22, Chappell Roan responded on Instagram, from the comfort of her bed. The singer denied seeing the little girl, saying no one came up to her. Roan stated she did not ask her security to approach anyone and expressed sadness that the child felt uncomfortable, noting, “You did not deserve that.” While she expressed genuine sincerity many on social media platforms like ‘TikTok’, felt the response was lack luster due her ‘tone of voice’ and the fact that she was laying down.
Around a day later the Security guard Pascal D, speaks up and claims “full reasonability” for the hotel confrontation, apologizing while clarifying he did not work for Chappell Roan. The Guard states he was present for another artist, allegedly that artist was Sabrina Carpenter however not creditable sources have backed this claim, and he made an independent “judgment call” on that day due to heightened security concerns. The mother made a response after the guard came out with his side, claiming the interaction was not as “calm” as described by the guard.
The backlash began to subside once it was revealed that the security guard was not part of Roan’s team. However, this situation has opened the flood gates once more of the main conversation that surrounds Chappell Roan, about how many are split on whether or not how she handles her boundaries and privacy is not just proper but as well as if there is misogyny involved with how many people react to her.
One of the common mind sets mentioned by those who criticize her is that: “She does it to herself” as seen in TikTok comment sections. There have been comedy videos comparing the singer’s request for privacy to the “South Park” episode where the Prince of Canada and his wife go on a “worldwide privacy tour”. While the episode is a parody of another celebrity, many feel it represents Roan as well.
Another response video is one posted by actress Jameela Jamil in which she takes the stance defending the singer for setting boundaries with her fans. Building off of this she touches on the idea that women only have “Two years at the top” before the media attempts to “drag them into submission”. Claiming a lot of the criticism leveled against her is rooted in misogyny. At the end of the day regardless of what story, you end up following, we must be more critical of the fact that we have all these viewpoints in the first place. With access to all this information its vital to be vigilant of the facts.
