Samsung recently announced in its end of service announcement that, starting July 2026, Samsung Messages will no longer be available to U.S. users. In order to “maintain a consistent messaging experience on Android” Samsung advises users to upgrade to Google Messages. Android 11 or older models will not be affected by this change. However, for any models beyond that, users are directed to follow instructions in order to install Google messages. Owners of the Galaxy S26 and newer devices will be unable to download the Messages app at all, and once the discontinuation in July arrives, all other devices will experience this as well.
Many Samsung users on Reddit shared their opinions on the switch expressing feelings of discontent. Users said that this change “sucks” and is “stupid”, with many citing that they will miss the customization that Samsung Messaging offers. One user notably stated that the main reason they buy Samsung is for “their own apps like Messages and Phone.”
The company, however, has categorized this change as an upgrade. With the switch, Samsung users will be able to utilize Google’s RCS messaging or Rich Communication Services. This will provide people with features like “Powerful Security” that utilizes AI to detect scam messages and “Multi-Device Connectivity” that allows messages to be switched across Samsung devices. Other features will “enhance” the messages that users are able to send and bring “expressivity” to chats.
In order for users to switch their messages to Google messages, they should be on the lookout for in-app instructions from Samsung messages. For a more direct process, users can view the instructional guide listed in the company’s end of service announcement. While the change might be different for many Samsung users, it promises improvements for their messages.
