Although the new year has just begun, political events haven’t seem to have slowed down. Here are a few major events that have happened in January:
- Zohran Mamdani sworn in as the 112th Mayor of New York City.
He has been the first mayor in history to be sworn in on the Quaran rather than the Bible, causing much controversy.
2. President Trump sent military troops to Venezuela capturing Dictator Nicholas Maduro and his wife, bringing them to a New York prison on drug trafficking charges.
Venezuelan Vice President, Delcy Rodriguez, assumes power.
3. President Trump makes public broadcasted claims of wanting to capture several other countries, to “save” them from their governments. He also announced his desire to “claim back” Greenland as he believes it still belongs to the U.S.
He has made negative remarks about the Mexican, Cuban, and Colombian governments specifically.
4. ICE Agents shot and killed Renee Good in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
This event was debated heavily on whether it was just or not as video accounts differ from the statements President Trump himself released alongside ICE officials.
5. Trump took America out of the World Health Organization.
6. Anti-ICE protests multiply and intensify al over the U.S.
Many who before blindly supported ICE and Trump’s escalation of deportations took a step back after the Renee Good shooting and the amplified force used by agents againstĀ anyone not cooperating instantly.
7. Maria Corina Machado tries to give her Nobel Prize Medal to President Trump.
8. University art student from Alaska, US is arrested for eating another student’s AI-generated work in an anti-AI protest.
AI affects more of our world than we realize.
9. President Trump threatens UK and seven additional countries with an increase on tariffs until they reach an agreement on him owning Greenland.
The tariffs are set to go up 10% February 1st and 25% in June.
10. ICE Agents shot and killed Alex Peretti.
Peretti was a VA nurse, shot after ‘resisting’ an ICE agent who sprayed him with a substance before shooting. Second shooting involving an American citizen “not cooperating”.
11. President Trump took the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Agreement.
This is the second time America has left the agreement.
12. Don Lemon and Georgia Fort, two independent journalists, were arrested in regards to an anti-ICE protest disturbing a church service in Minnesota. Both live streamed the entire event.
