The Global Sumud Flotilla is a civilian led, peaceful “fleet” full of humanitarian aid set to Gaza (Global Sumud Flotilla). Their mission is to “challenge Isreal’s illegal siege of Gaza” and represent global support for the freedom of everyone in Gaza (Global Sumud Flotilla).
This year the activists have announced another mission with plans for 100 more boats heading to Gaza in March. After facing a multitude of challenges and near-death situations, the activists have claimed that this upcoming flotilla will be “the biggest civilian-led mobilization against Israel’s actions in Gaza.”
These ships are not led by a large corporation or politicians, rather, they are made up of activists, doctors and teachers. The Flotilla departed in June 2025 with one of the most renowned activists on board, Gretta Thunberg. She was among the activists who were imprisoned by Israeli forces last year.
Although there are conflicting claims, last year the world witnessed the Global Sumud Flotilla attacks through an Instagram Live Stream. The video showcased the explosions targeted at the Spectre boat, documented by the organization.
The activists were detained and mistreated. The Israeli Navy intercepted the ship that was destined towards Gaza with food, medicine and more necessary resources. One activist “…described being forced to sit or kneel on concrete in front of an Israeli flag for hours,” as well as having his belongings destroyed while “…being left in the cold temperatures with little clothing” (CNN). The announcement was made official in a conference at the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
Although the ceasefire has been put into place, Isreal still remains to restrict “more than two dozen humanitarian organizations” from providing Palestinians with resources to aid the starved population (AP News).
Despite the challenges that the Global Sumud Flotilla faced, the activists and civilians are still passionate about challenging Israel’s mistreatment and showcasing the international support for Palestine’s prosperity.
