Artificial intelligence has infiltrated the book market on Amazon. Many new books that are published on the website simply use AI to copy or summarize authentic books published by legitimate authors. This has impacted authors tremendously because it plagiarizes their hard work and hurts their revenue.
One author, Liane Moccia, who after recently publishing her book saw on Amazon that βin addition to my book were two other books with the same exact title β that were not written by me.β
Moccia commented that while viewing the content of these plagiarized books, something felt off. Pages were blank, chapters didn’t exist, and there was no author bio. The book seemed “like AI-written content” to Moccia.
This has been the trend with many other authors who’ve made their books accessible on Amazon: they see numerous other books using the same title or idea as their original books. The AI-plagiarized books have also been seen to slightly alter the language of authentic books and publish them under fake names.
The Authors Guild, a strong advocate against AI books on Amazon, has worked to combat this problem. They have lobbied for laws and actively work with Amazon to bring light to the struggles that many authors face with the inclusion of AI in the book market. Currently they are trying to, “require AI-generated text content to be labeled and identifiable” on Amazon. They hope that this will push readers to steer clear of AI-written books and give credible authors the recognition they deserve.
One way to help stop this issue is to flag fake authors so Amazon can remove AI-written content. This helps buyers not fall susceptible to this AI plagiarism. It’s also important to research authors or check for their social media presence. Leaving reviews for authentic authors as well saves other book buyers from buying AI books and ultimately helps benefit the authors who worked hard on their books.
