Love Through a Prism was released in January of 2026, and it is easily one of the best shoujo anime’s I’ve ever seen. The story follows Lili Ichijoin, a young Japanese woman who travels to London in hopes of becoming the number one painter at Saint Thomas Art Academy. There, she meets Kit Church, the current number one. While this may be initially seen as a simple rivals-to- lovers, it is so much more than that.
Written by Yoko Kamio, this story expands on many simple themes and leaves you pondering the importance of art and love after every episode. Taking place in the early 20th century, Lili explores her life in London with an appreciation for her own culture and identity, while also learning how to fit into a classist European society.
What made me want to keep coming back, is that all of the characters are well written, no matter how minor they are. You can understand every perspective, whether you like them or hate them. For example, Catherine Aster, Kit’s Church’s betrothed, was initially very selfish. She did everything in her power to humiliate Lili to keep her away from Kit. However, as the story goes on, you see her realize she has dreams for her own life aside from marrying Kit.
Scarlet Toribio, a 12th grade band major, was the one who introduced me to this show. She generously complimented the show, stating that it was “…like watching a painting come to life.” Every scene is drawn and animated with care and true artistry. Anyone who has an appreciation for art, culture, and a slow burn romance will like this anime.
